What's the importance of setting a foundation with powder?

Asked a year ago

Every time I apply foundation, I wonder about the finishing steps. I've seen many makeup artists and enthusiasts swear by setting powders, but I've always been curious: what's the real significance of setting a foundation with powder? I want my makeup to stay flawless throughout the day, and I've heard that powder can help with this. But how does it work, and is it essential for everyone, regardless of skin type?

If you want your foundation to stay on all day, applying setting powders is key. All skin types can benefit from setting their foundation with a powder, but its application method and where it is applied will differ for each skin type:

  • Dry skin: For this skin type, loose powders are best because they are more finely milled than pressed powders. Therefore, it is less likely to stick to dry patches of your skin.
  • Oily skin: Mattifying powders or oil-absorbing setting powders are good at ensuring your foundation doesn’t move around throughout the day.
  • Combination skin: For this skin type, you can apply mattifying setting powders on areas where you get oily, and apply illuminating setting powders where you want a sheen.

Depending on how you like your makeup to look, you may not reach for a setting powder at all. For example, if you have extremely dry skin or if you enjoy a very dewy finish to your foundation. Overall, setting powders are not essential, but it does make your foundation long-lasting.
