Are there any mistakes to avoid when applying highlighter to your face?

Asked a year ago

Hey folks, highlighter seems like a good addition to my routine, but I'm afraid of making some rookie mistakes. Are there any pitfalls I should avoid when applying highlighter to my face? Any suggestions would be a huge help. Thanks in advance!

Hi. Yes, there are things you should avoid doing when applying highlighter. Here are the most common that I have seen:

  • Using a large brush to apply highlighter This is a no-no. Highlight is applied to specific points of your face to draw attention to them. Therefore, a tapered brush or a fan brush are the best makeup tools for this.
  • Applying highlighter to textured areas of your skin It is normal to have texture, and if you have a lot of it, my advice is to use a cream highlighter or a finely milled powder that isn’t too bright.
  • Not blending the highlighter. I was guilty of this in the past. I used to apply highlighter to the tip of my nose with my pinky finger and just leave it at that—it looked like a crystal ball. However, regardless of which lighting you use to apply makeup, it is always best to blend the edges of your highlighter. In natural lighting, this may not look as good as it does under artificial lights.
